Through the Student Trainee Exchange Program (STEP), ELSA members have the opportunity to do a legal internship in a law office, company, international organization or public agency in a foreign country. The interns usually work in exchange for a modest salary that covers the cost of living. Unpaid positions may be offered in some countries.

What are the advantages of STEP over other internships?
As a rule, the internships are paid. You receive remuneration from your employer that approximately covers the cost of living, so you don’t have to worry about financing your living costs in a foreign country by yourself.
You also receive guidance and support throughout your entire internship. The STEP officer from your local ELSA group will help you throughout the application process. When you arrive at your place of internship, the local STEP officer there will welcome you and help you find an apartment, invite you to ELSA events, and so on, so that you don’t feel alone in a new place.
What are the terms and conditions?
According to a decision of the International Council Meeting (ICM), every STEP applicant must be an ELSA member.
If you are interested in STEP, just ask you local STEPer. He will give you all the information you need.
You must fill out your application truthfully. If you have special language skills or legal experience, you will be asked to provide documentation of this by your local STEP officer.
How does the internship work?
Your local STEP officer will inform you if you have been chosen for an internship. From this point on, the local group at your place of internship is there to support you. The STEP officer there will help you look for an apartment and will welcome you upon arrival.
On-site, you will receive guidance from the ELSA local group and can participate in their events. As a rule, you receive remuneration from your employer that approximately covers the cost of living in the country. Exceptions exist for internships in certain countries (more information is available from your local STEP officer) and internships in international organizations.
